Write down this day in history. February the 7th 2006, and the day that we all found out that Myspace was making the first full featured ONLINE movie. The project originally started out with Myspace starting out on its own, but than probably thought they were not ready to handle EVERY aspect of making a movie succesful so they approached Vertigo and Film4 to come aboard as financing, producing and distribution partners.
Whats interesting is that the competition is UK based where Myspace does not have as much of a following as they do in the US. The actual competition is to find a director for the movie. Aspiring directors will post short videos on the site and the winner will be chosen by a celebrity jury, and myspace users as well.
Contest will launch Wednesday at a party in central London. Any U.K. resident, whether an established director or a complete newcomer, will be eligible to submit a short to a dedicated section of the MySpace Web site through April 27.
These entries then will be whittled down by the partners to a shortlist of around a dozen. The final three will be selected by a jury that includes actors Sienna Miller and Ashley Walters; directors Anthony Minghella, Nick Love and Kevin Macdonald; and producers Stephen Woolley and Andrew Macdonald. Myspace members will than also be invited for the chance to contribute to the development, casting and marketing decisions.
Interesting thing is that if the director that you voted for is chosen you will also be asked to help in the project. That’s a nice little way to make sure people vote for the best rather than the most popular myspace user.
Anyone else think that this a copy of Doritos’s plan of letting users make this years super bowl commercial? This is a revolution people; the power is being handed down to the little people. For centuries the power was controlled by the few, and now the power is being shared, the internet is the reason for this. We have on-demand printing for books, and video sharing on youtube.
I seriously doubt that the movie will be a major success especially since it will be a UK director, unlike the US, in the UK tastes are very different, so it could be that what might be a success in the UK will not actually convert in the US. So make sure you keep your eyes open.
