The PageRank Is Driving me CRAZY! And Everyone Else TOO!

Don’t forget to: Digg This Story!
What is PageRank?:
I’m going to try to be as simple as possible in my explanation of what PageRank is. It is a number given to your website based on the number and the quality of your backlinks. The number is from 0-10. When I first started with websites I thought the lower the better so imagine how excited I was when I found out all my websites were ranked 0?!
The alogritham to calculate the PageRank is based on a top secret formula that was invented in Zero Gravity by top NASA scientists. This secret mission was carried out in the Russian Space Station before it started breaking down. Now that they have the formula all figured out Russia has decided to sell the Space Station to the Malaysians.
Okay thats a lie.
The real formula was invented by Larry Page. Thus the reason it’s called PAGE Rank, very simply named after the person who invented it. Much like Google’s other project ‘Orkut’. But don’t get me started on that.
Why is It Important:
It is generally thought that the higher Page Rank you have the better your site will do in the SERP’s (Search Engine Results Page). I don’t buy into this story because I have had sites ranked on the first page with a Page Rank of 0. Actually at this point in time I have over 150 sites and none of which are ranking above 0. But with the PR update going on I should be getting about 40 sites with a PR 4+!
So if it isn’t good for SERP’s, than what the hell is it good for? Well, simple enough what it always boils down to is: $$$$.
Link Sales: People Make a killing selling links on sites with high PR. Whether the site has traffic or not is a different story. People just want to have their link on a site with PR because it will eventually lead to the PR love being passed onto one site to another.
Directories: Directories with High PR get paid more than directories with no PR. A listing at a directory with PR7+ will set you back anywhere from $20 to $300. Now if you own a directory you make money by selling links and PEOPLE BUY THEM! Not only that but the higher PR your directory has the more you can sell it for. For more information check out this post about making money online.
Bragging Rights: Well come on! We are all webmasters here and this is all we have to BRAG ABOUT. We really need to get out more.
Why are you Going Nuts Mubin?:
Check out this thread. We have a great community over at Digital Point. But this Page Rank thing has people going crazy! We have got members at each other’r throats. There are 2 sides to this war, first side are the ones that say the PR update aint happening. Proof has been posted with screenshots and other proof but they refuse to believe it. The other side what I like to call the ‘cool’ side. Knows the PR update is going on, because you can’t turn your back on the PROOF THAT HAS BEEN POSTED!
The only way this will ever end is when the PR update is complete. Google is taking their damn sweet time with this, and thats why everyones going crazy. It has led to over 150 pages of dialouge and over 150k page VIEWS!

My personal website is more like a business card thing, just something I have up there to show people what I do. I don’t really care about the traffic going to it, I rarely make changes to it. Its Alexa rank is something like 4,200,000, Google show 5 inbound links 3 of which are from the site itself, but its page rank is 3 and has been for a long time.
My 3dskimaps site was similar, I was running “under the radar” for a while and had very little traffic, but a page rank of 4. Then I decided to get serious about it, made extensive additions, posted to forums and other places, got the Alexa rank up to 155,000 at one point, traffic up 5 to 10-fold, more inbound links, etc., etc.
And I watched my Page rank drop off the face of the Earth even in the midst of this huge influx in traffic. Over on livepr.raketforskning.com they show PR on several Google servers, and one by one they all dropped to zero.
I don’t get it. I guess it will go back up at some point, I hope by next ski season.

I had a website that had a rank of 6, but it hardly made any money. Just goes to show that the page rank isn’t that important.
