The Twitter Spam has arrived
Twitter has been around for more than a year now, but unlike myspace it took some time to take off. Where MySpace had friend adders and friend trains, twitter is now catching up as well.
First it was the auto-follow that some of the largers twitter users were using, John Chow, Guy Kawasaki and a few others all followed you back if you followed them.
Than came the websites that let you submit your username and as long as you followed everyone that followed you, your name would stay on the list. John Chow actually started one of these sites called twitterfollower you may be wondering how he plans to monetize this site, I imagine that once he gets enough people on the site he will be able to sell the top spots on the site, at the moment his username is at the top of the list though.
Than came the twitter games. Companies like Spymaster and SNOD are filling up your twitter timeline like so much facebook quiz applications that I usually remove anyone that tries to "kidnap" or "hijack" me.
Now finally we come to the competitions. Much like President Obama won the election using a grass-roots campaign strategy companies are now using twitter as a free source of advertising. Its pretty simple, hold a competition that you give away a free kindle, iphone, or camera for following and retweeting a phrase and you are automatically entered into the comp. It’s great because essentially the company is spenindg very little money to get a large amount of publicity. One company called squarspace has actually gamed this quite well, rather than having you follow them, they would rather you use the hashtag #squarespace which helped them get to the top of twitter trends a few days ago.
How long before Twitter comes in with a bitch slap on sites/services like these? It’s a shame that everyone is making dollar off of twitter except for the people that actually started the site?
What say you?

I would think Twitter would have some kind of advertisements, but I don’t know how they make their money. I also think it is pretty cool to see how people are using Twitter. There are a lot of innovative ways. Greg Ellison

With any “new” internet idea it will not be long before it gets exploited. However there has to be a bit of give and take which unfortunately be self moderated so someone has to do it and I guess Twitter do not have the resources to do so.

It’s a great way to get your message out there, but like any social network, there will be a lot of noise instead of conversation.

It’s crazy how twitter has become a spam machine, people are really taking advantage of this amazing tool to create a bunch of profiles and mass follow other people and then do it all over again.
That’s why I have kind of give up on twitter… There are even nude profiles, I seriously think it is going to be hard for Twitter’s Developers to fix it.July 28th, 2009 at 8:12 pm -

The evolution of spammers -> snail mail, telemarketing,tv crap, email, search results, myspace, facebook, twitter……
It’s just a matter of time before they move in and crap stuff up.
